As part of efforts to spread the message of energy conservation, Kerala will join the rest of the country and 172 nations across the world for observing the ‘Earth Hour’ on Saturday.

The worldwide movement that is spearheaded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) will be observed from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., during which time the public have been requested to switch off lights and electrical appliances. It will also mark the launch of the #Give Up to Give Back campaign of WWF-India that aims at inspiring individuals, institutions, and organisations to curb habits and practices that burdens life and environment.

WWF-India State director Renjan Mathew Varghese said Earth Hour had immense significance for a State like Kerala that reeled under power shortage and that was heavily dependent of hydroelectricity. Given the various limitations, the only option was to stress on energy conservation and make the shift to renewable energy.

Earth Hour will be observed in Kerala, mainly in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Thrissur. In the State capital, the campaign will be undertaken with the support of various institutions.
