The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) on Thursday took out a march to the residence of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob and staged a sit-in there, alleging that the government has not made available essential goods at affordable prices at State-run public distribution centres.
The march, inaugurated by DYFI district secretary I. Saju, demanded that the government make urgent interventions in the public distribution system (PDS) to ensure that there were adequate stocks of essential goods in PDS centres during the Onam season. It alleged that the number of items made available on subsidy through these centres had been slashed and the quantity and number of items distributed in Onam kits to below poverty line families reduced.
The DYFI would intensify its agitation if urgent steps were not taken to solve the issue, its leaders said in a press release here.
