The district administration will, in a day or two, initiate a drive against wayside eateries ( thattu kada ), following reports of them being run in an unhygienic manner.
District Collector K. N. Satheesh told The Hindu on Tuesday that the five squads, constituted by the district administration to enforce the terms of the prohibitory orders issued by him the other day, would lead the raids on the wayside eateries.
“These squads have already commenced operations on Tuesday morning. Wayside eateries found atop drainage channels and in other dirty locales will be asked to shut shop,” Mr. Satheesh said. No one was caught dumping waste in public places during the squads’ operations on Tuesday, he added.
Medical teams will shortly begin visits to all schools and anganvadis in the district and hold monthly reviews on the hygiene situation in these institutions.

The inspection teams would also take steps to ensure that the drinking water available in schools and anganvadis was safe for human consumption.
