December 08, 2011 12:12 pm | Updated 12:12 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The city traffic police and the Legal Metrology Department have decided to widen the inspection of autorickshaws in the city to check their fare meters in the wake of complaints that some of the drivers were tampering with the meters and fleecing passengers.

Complaints against auto drivers who refuse to operate the meter and against fleecing can be registered by submitting the registration number of the autorickshaw at the Legal Metrology Department office or by calling 0471-2346227, according to a press note issued here on Wednesday.

‘Check meters'

The team conducted an inspection of more than 100 autorickshaws at Karamana here last month. Action has been initiated against 16 autorickshaw owners for tampering with the meters and not affixing the authorised seal on their vehicles. They were also fined Rs.15,000.

The Legal Metrology Department has cautioned the passengers to check that the meters are on while travelling and pay only the amount shown on the meter.
