Surging floodwaters inundated many parts of the city and suburbs in the heavy rain on Monday evening. Water flowed into many households and traffic was disrupted for a short while along key routes near East Fort and Thampanoor.

Traffic was blocked for a few hours at Thiruvallam following a minor landslip near BNV Higher Secondary School. Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Vizhinjam and Chenkalchoola units were at work to remove the block when reports last came in.

The major areas affected by the floods included Vanchiyoor, Palkulangara, Thampanoor and East Fort.

A rise in water level in the Thekkankara canal, which passes through Fort area, caused flooding in several flats adjacent to it. The flooding in the canal was caused by waste water from various parts of the city.

District Collector K.N. Satheesh told The Hindu that the Irrigation Department had opened the sandbar that separated the backwaters from the sea at Muthalappozhi to control the floodwaters.

According to information from the Meteorological Department, the city received 5 cm of rainfall on Monday. The rain is expected to continue through the night and on Tuesday.
