Documentary film fete in city from June 10

The 9th edition of the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), organised by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, will be held from June 10 to 14 at the Kairali, Sree and Nila theatres. The inaugural event will be held at the Kairali theatre on June 10 evening.

A total of 204 films will be screened in the documentary, short film, animation, music video and campus film categories. There will be 79 films in the competition section. The theme of this year’s festival is wildlife. Films by wildlife documentary film-makers Naresh Bedi, Shekhar Dattatre, Praveen Singh, Sandesh Kadoor and Suresh Elamon will be screened. Panel discussions with these film-makers will also be part of the festival.

Manipuri film-maker Ariban Syam Sharma’s films have been included in the retrospective section. Films of Chinese film-maker Wang Bing and Sanjay Kak will be part of the ‘Filmmaker in Focus’ section. Other highlights of the year include a section of German films screened at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, considered one of the foremost festivals for independent films and a section curated by Marathi film-maker Umesh Kulkarni. Around 120 film-makers will take part in the festival.

The fiction jury will be chaired by film-maker Kamal Swaroop. The jury includes film-maker Henry Hughes and film editor Manoj Kannoth. The non-fiction jury will be headed by cinematographer K.U. Mohanan. The other members of the jury are Italian documentary film-maker Simone Gattoni and documentary film-maker Nishtha Jain.
