The State Mahila Congress has strongly protested against the government’s decision to promulgate an ordinance amending the Travancore Devaswom Board Act that would keep women out of the board.

The organisation has demanded firm action to ensure appropriate representation of women in the board, even if this involved increasing the number of members.

In a letter to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Wednesday, Mahila Congress State unit president Bindu Krishna said the move could not be justified coming as it did in an age of women’s empowerment and when civil society was actively debating the need for gender justice and all-round representation of women in all walks of life.

Justice for victim

In another letter to Mr. Chandy, Bindu Krishna urged him to intervene and ensure justice to the victim of the Suryanelli rape case who was being discriminated against following her suspension from government service in a case of embezzlement.
