The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has finalised and handed over designs of flyovers needed for three busy junctions along the proposed 21.82-km Technocity-Karamana elevated light metro corridor to the government.

The flyovers, which will ensure smooth flow of traffic along the NH 66, are to come up at Sreekariyam, Ulloor and Pattom junctions. The flyover at the busy Thampanoor has been finalised and is being fined tuned by the DMRC.

The design and drawings were handed over by DMRC, the interim consultant to the MRTS project, to the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd (KRTL)-the special purpose vehicle set up to execute the light metro. The KRTL has in turn forwarded the designs to the Public Works Department for approval, official sources said.

The flyover at Sreekariyam along light metro corridor will be 630 m long and will have common pillars for vehicular traffic and MRTS.

The cost of the flyover, including land acquisition (Rs. 81.5 crore), will be Rs. 135.40 crore. In Uloor junction, the DMRC has avoided MRTS corridor and had proposed flyover to the Medical College side. The 390m-long flyover will cost Rs. 52.68 crore that include Rs. 26 crore for land.

The flyover at Pattom that commences from near the PSC office will have a length of 570 metre and will end near Plamoodu. It will have common pillars for vehicular traffic and MRTS.

Of the Rs. 84.60 crore needed, the cost of the land acquisition will be Rs. 29.40 crore. As much as 2.27 hectares of land has to be acquired, 163 buildings to be shifted for the three flyovers that will incur a total cost of Rs. 272.68 crore to the exchequer. The DMRC has insisted on the flyovers as the Light Metro has to move along the concrete deck which will come up on piles on the road median. If these works are not taken up before or along with the light metro, it will not be possible to take up the work of flyovers later. Project officials said it is for the government to give administrative sanction for land acquisition, technical sanction for flyover and select the agency-PWD or DMRC-for the construction of flyovers. Budget allocation had been made in the revised budget of the LDF government. The 21.82-km Technocity-Karamana stretch, that has three reaches, is estimated to cost Rs.4,219 crore as per DPR prepared by DMRC.
