District panchayat members sworn in

Newly elected members of the District Panchayat were sworn in at a function held at the District Panchayat headquarters here on Monday. Oldest elected member of the new council Beegam Nabeesa, 64, of Kaniyapuram division was the first person to be sworn in by district collector Sanjay Kaul. She then administered the oath of office to the remaining 25 members.

The newly elected members of the District Panchayat are Subaida Teacher (Chemmaruthi), R.P. Rajitha (Navaikulam), K. Rajendran (Kilimanoor), Sukhi Rajan (Kallara), Remani P. Nair (Venjaramoodu), R.J. Manju (Anad), Sophy Thomas (Palode), Advt Beena (Aryanad), Anad Jayan (Vellanad), R.K. Ansajitha Rassal (Poovachal), Shine Kumar J. (Vellarada), N. Ratheendran (Kunnathukal), Ajitha (Parassala), S. Ushakumar (Mariyapuram), C.S. Lenin (Kanjiramkulam), V. Rajendran (Balaramapuram), Rufus Daniel (Venganor), M.R. Baiju (Pallichal), Malayankeezhu Venugopal (Malayankeezhu), M.S. Raju (Karakulam), Satheeshan Nair G. (Mudakkal), Beegam Nabeesa (Kaniyapuram), M.R. Ravi (Murukkumpuzha), Shailaja Beegam (Kizhuvilam), S. Sashankan (Chirayankeezhu), Sreeli Sreedharan (Manambur).

UDF, with the support of two members of Socialist Janata (Democratic) party, has the majority in the 26-member council. LDF secured 12 seats.

Following the swearing in ceremony the first general council meeting of the District Panchayat was held. The first agenda of the newly elected council was notification for the elections to the posts of District Panchayat president and vice president. Election for president and vice president posts will be held on November 8, District Panchayat secretary V.S. Santhosh Kumar said. The president post this time is reserved for women candidates.

Election for members of the five standing committees will be held on November 18 while the standing committee chairpersons' election will be held on November 24.
