District jail to dish out chicken biriyani

Following the success of the chappati and chicken curry sales project, the Kollam district jail launched a chicken biriyani project from Friday.

The new project was launched by the Director General of Police (Prisons) Rishiraj Singh at a function presided over by the Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) P. Pradeep.

The sale was inaugurated by handing over a packet to the Kollam press club secretary, D. Jayakrishnan.

Cost of the biriyani

Each biriyani packet weighing 500 grams will be sold for Rs.60.

Jail superintendent A.A. Hamid said to begin with, 100 biriyani packets would be sold daily.

As demand rises, production would be increased.

Two inmates of the jail, who were trained by staff of the State governments’ Food Craft Institute, are the chefs behind the biriyani.

Mr. Hamid said that the two who had received the training would pass on the recipe to other inmates and train them so that production continued as and when those who received the initial training were released.

He said that the sale of chapati and chicken curry was bringing an average revenue of Rs.25,000 per day and was a profitable venture. These projects are being implemented as part of a livelihood means programme to reform the prisoners.

The jail authorities expect the biriyani project to be profitable.

Apart from the existing sales counter outside the gates of the district jail, a new counter too would be opened near the Collectorate bus bay along the National Highway, Mr. Hamid said.

While the chapatti and chicken curry sales start in the morning and goes on well after dusk, the biriyani sale will commence at 12 noon each day.
