A history-sheeter, Purandaran Biju, alias Bhuvanachandran, 36, was hacked to death and two of his accomplices seriously injured in an attack by unidentified persons at Enikkara, near Karakulam, on the outskirts of the city early Friday.

R. Vijayan, Circle Inspector, Nedumangad, said the gang was suspected to have had at least six members. They reached Biju’s house at Enikkara when he and his friends, reportedly around five in number, were allegedly having liquor around midnight.

The Aruvikkara police, who reached the spot around 1 a.m., found Biju and two of his friends, also men with known criminal track records, lying with grievous injuries.

While Biju was declared brought dead at the Government Medical College Hospital here, the other two — identified as Jambu Suresh, 42, and Chandran of Mullasseril, 35 — were recuperating in the intensive care unit of the hospital after surgeries to sew up several sword injuries. The police were yet to record their statements, Mr. Vijayan said. As of now, there was no clue on who was behind the attack, he said.

‘Friends’ missing

The police are on the lookout for other persons believed to have been with Biju at the time of the attack and who reportedly fled the spot before the police reached.

Biju, who was released from prison only 20 days ago after being detained for the third time under the Kerala Antisocial Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA), had over 20 cases registered against him in the Nedumangad, Aruvikkara, Vattiyurkavu, Peroorkada and Aryanad police stations, Mr. Vijayan said.
