CPI(M) candidate for by-poll tomorrow

May 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] secretariat meeting on Friday will decide the party candidate for the Aruvikkara by-election.

Announcing this at a meet-the-press of the Trivandrum Press Club on Wednesday, CPI(M) State unit secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the party was confident of winning the Aruvikkara by-election scheduled for June 27.

Mr. Balakrishnan expressed the hope that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) would get an upper hand in the forthcoming elections to the local bodies in the State. The “anti-people” policies of the UDF government in the State and the Narendra Modi government at the Centre would work in favour of the LDF.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the UDF had become weak and many constituents were leaving the front. People who rallied behind the UDF were dissatisfied as it could not implement the announced schemes in the budget and Governor’s Address. The budget allocation was getting lapsed, he said.

Pointing out the rivalry among UDF constituents and the infighting in the Congress, the CPI(M) State secretary said corruption had been the hallmark of the UDF government headed by Oommen Chandy.

The CPI(M) leader said the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) was trying to sabotage the corruption case against Finance Minister K.M. Mani by delaying the charge-sheet. Political pressure was being exerted to help Mr. Mani. He alleged that the government was trying to revamp the VACB to help the Finance Minister and Excise Minister K. Babu.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the UDF was indulging in bifurcation of local bodies for political gains.
