CPI general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of stooping to target individual Opposition leaders during his campaign tour.

His comments against Opposition leaders are not the mark of a Prime Minister, he said while addressing a meet-the-press programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here on Wednesday.

Mr. Reddy, who is here to campaign for the LDF in the forthcoming Assembly elections, said the communal, divisive, anti-minority and pro-corporate policies of the BJP-led NDA government had generated ill will among the people.

“The government has failed to rein in price rise and Centre-State relations in India are at an all-time low.

The bid to topple the governments in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has exposed the threats posed by the BJP and its allies to the country’s democratic traditions,” he said.

Mr. Reddy said the series of scams under the UDF government had created a situation for the LDF to come to power with a decisive majority.

Unholy alliance

Answering questions, he said there was a tacit understanding between the UDF and BJP to defeat LDF candidates in some constituencies such as Thiruvananthapuram. “The voters will see through this unholy alliance,” he added.

Mr. Reddy said he saw the possibility of a political realignment for the emergence of an anti-BJP, non-Congress alternative in India.
