Leachate plant to be commissioned
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the police to provide protection on August 3 to transport and install machineries and other equipment for the leachate plant being set up at the Villappilsala solid waste treatment plant.
The Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A.M.Shaffique said protection should be given till the commissioning of the leachate plant.
The directive was passed when a case relating to the plant came up for hearing. The court had earlier directed police protection for opening the closed down plant and resuming the operation of the solid waste treatment plant and transporting garbage to the plant. A contempt petition was filed by the Thiruvanantahpuram Corporation following the failure of the police to provide protection.
In a statement, Mohammed Shafi, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nedumangad, submitted that the police were willing to give effective protection to the Corporation. However, the police were cautious not to create any serious casualties in view of the protest raised by the people of Vilappil panchayat while giving police protection for transporting the garbage to the plant. In fact , the police were giving effective protection for taking out the processed garbage from the plant to different places. He said that solid wastes could be taken to the plant only after the leachate treatment plant was made operational.
