The city Corporation authorities have yet again locked horns with the Suchitwa Mission, with the Left councillors holding a protest meeting at the mission’s office on Tuesday over the delay in granting technical sanction to the proposed Organic Waste Converter (OWC) plants.
“We had sent requests for technical sanctions for 22 OWC plants and three incinerators a few months ago. But there has been no response. We ended the protest following an assurance that a meeting with the Mayor will be held on Wednesday morning,” said S. Pushapalatha, chairperson of the health standing committee.
But according to Suchitwa Mission officials, the delay happened because they were not “fully convinced” of the effectiveness of the plants.
“Initially, the Corporation wrote us a letter asking for sanction. Since we have certain processes to follow, we asked for a detailed proposal. Then they gave a few more details, which were insufficient. The latest reply has the cost estimates and other details,” said the official.
He said a committeeconducted a study at the plant in Thrissur Corporation.
“The plant in Thrissur is said to be of four- tonne capacity, but the shredding method of waste raises doubts on whether proper composting will happen,” the official said.
