Faced with the aggravating crisis on the waste management front, the city Corporation Council on Tuesday passed an emergency resolution requesting the State government to permit the civic body to set up biogas plants on the premises of 21 government establishments in the city.
The locations include the Central Jail, Vikas Bhavan, Shanthi Kavadam at Thycaud, Civil Station at Kudappanakkunnu, Railway Quarters, Vanchiyoor Court premises and Sanskrit College.
A slew of issues was raised during the three-hour council meeting which witnessed heated arguments over a number of issues. The issue of allotment of funds to Janasree, an organisation led by Congress leader M.M. Hassan, brought up halfway through the course of the meeting led to heated arguments between the United Democratic Front and Left Democratic Front councillors, abandoning discussions on civic issues requiring immediate intervention such as waste management, street lights, stray dogs and road work.
The issue of fund allocation to various wards as part of the 12th Five Year Perspective Plan was another issue that rocked the council meeting with some councillors alleging that the amount set aside for their respective wards was inadequate. The Mayor said that the funds had to be evenly distributed as the total amount set aside by the government posed huge constraints in engaging in a range of developmental programmes.
Health standing committee chairperson S. Pushpalatha said that a process had begun to segregate the plastic waste and to convert the organic waste into fertilizer. Clean Well workers were being engaged again to segregate the garbage at Chala market, beside the Attakulangara bypass.
A press release issued by the committee, said that the Corporation would be giving away biodegradable waste, with all the plastic separated, for agricultural purposes.
