Corporation gears up for green Pongala

Devotees urged to avoid plastic bottles and covers

The City Corporation has formulated a project for implementing the green protocol during Attukal Pongala.

Arrangements have been made for giving publicity in railway stations and bus stations that those coming to offer Pongala should avoid plastic covers and disposable containers, plates, and glasses and instead carry steel utensils and glasses for eating food.

Publicity will also be given through FM radio, TV, cinema halls, and social media, besides mike points set up in different parts of the city in connection with the Pongala. LED display promotion vehicles will also be used.

Green volunteers will analyse the functions of organisations that have registered for taking part in the green protocol contest announced by the Corporation. Awards will be given to five organisations that are adjudged the best.

The Mayor has appealed to those distributing food and water to cooperate with the green protocol.

As many as 1,784 workers will be deployed for sanitation works. As many as 32 health inspectors and 60 junior health inspectors have been deployed under the Corporation health officer and health supervisors to coordinate and supervise the sanitation activities. Besides 23 vehicles of the Corporation, 35 lorries and 10 pick-ups will be taken on rent.

The Corporation’s 29 water tanks and 20 tanks taken on rent will be used for drinking water distribution. The tanks to be set up in different parts of the city will be filled by water tankers of the City Corporation.

Twenty-eight water tanks have been arranged to wash the main roads on Pongala day, after the clean-up is over.

Three ambulances of the Corporation will be deployed to meet any untoward situation. Public health nurses will be posted in the ambulances. A control rooms has been opened on the temple premises to coordinate sanitation activities.

A meeting to review the arrangements for the festival was presided over by Mayor V.K. Prasanth.
