The Kerala Municipality and Corporation Staff Union (KMSCU) has threatened to launch an indefinite strike from October 9 to press its demands.
The announcement was made at a State convention of the union held at VJT Hall in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. The congregation of various unions was inaugurated by M.M. Lawrence, president of the Kerala Municipal Corporation Workers’ Federation.
“We deal with so many aspects that affect people’s lives directly and the government needs to play the role of a partner, rather than supporting us occasionally,” he said, underlying the need for civic bodies to become self-sufficient. The union’s demands include salary and pension payment of workers. The responsibility should be carried out by the government directly, according to the workers. The union sought revival of the engineering service department. The union also sought employment of more workers to address staff shortage.
Union workers said in spite of a day-long strike on February 9, there was no move to convene a meeting or take any steps to ensure that their requests were heeded.
