As many as 1,057 mentally challenged children, including 391 girl students, are set to receive financial assistance for education under the People's Plan Campaign of the City Corporation for 2010- '11.
Mayor K.Chandrika inaugurated the scheme named ‘Vikas Manas' at a function at the Government Teachers' Training Institute, Manacaud, here on Tuesday.
She distributed Rs.25.73 lakh to the beneficiary students. Addressing the gathering, the Mayor said the scheme would be extended to cover more students in the coming years.
Deputy Mayor G. Happikumar presided over the function.
Standing committee chairpersons Palayam Rajan and V.S. Padmakumar; councillors S.Vijayakumar, P.Ashok Kumar, and P. Sasikumaran Nair; project implementing officer Sulthana Begum; school Principal Kuryakose; and PTA representative Samad were present.
