The Congress is planning to move the State Election Commission (SEC) with a representation highlighting the alleged irregularities in the preparation of voters' list, delimitation of wards and selection of polling stations for the upcoming elections to the city Corporation council.
District Congress Committee (DCC) president V.S. Sivakumar said a delegation comprising party MLAs and leaders would submit a complaint to the SEC on Thursday. A press release quoting Mr. Sivakumar said here on Tuesday that the delimitation of wards had violated the conditions imposed by the Election Commission.
It said the selection of polling stations would force voters in many wards to travel a long distance to exercise their franchise. “Members of some families have even been given different polling booths. The draft voters' list does not mention the house number accurately. The inclusion of names in the list is heavily weighed in favour of the CPI(M),” Mr. Sivakumar said.
He alleged that the CPI(M) district secretary's demand to rectify the irregularities in the voters' list and ward delimitation was part of a conspiracy aimed at getting the elections postponed. He said the Congress had decided to move the SEC as the party had little hope that Corporation officials would ensure a free and fair election.
