Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has called for public condemnation of the trend to brand all environmental activists as anti-development campaigners.
Delivering the inaugural address at a seminar on ‘Global warming and the survival of the planet,' organised by the Swadesi Council, here on Wednesday, he said, “Only a true lover of nature can appreciate and espouse sustainable development. Such a person speaks the language of well being. Nature lovers shoulder the onerous task of preserving the earth for future generations.”
Mr. Viswom said Mahatma Gandhi's swadesi ideals and vision should be the guiding light for mankind. He termed Gandhiji the greatest environmental guru the world had ever seen.
He exhorted the public to realise the mistakes committed in the name of development. “It is the flawed development policies pursued by countries over the past 400 years that are responsible for global warming. At this rate, the global temperature may well double in another 100 years. Mankind will be one of the first species to be wiped out as a result of extreme climatic conditions.”
Mr. Viswom reminded people of their responsibility to preserve the soil, air, water and natural beauty for future generations.
J.M. Rahim, coordinator, Gandhian Study Centre, University of Kerala, presided over the function. M. Nandakumar, director, Information and Public Relations, delivered the keynote address. R. Ajayan, convener, Plachimada Action Council; V. Sreejith Kumar, chairman, Swadesi Council; and R.S. Jayakumar, its director; spoke.
Mr. Nandakumar also inaugurated the web site of the council.
