The Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad held a programme at Shanghumughom to focus on ocean pollution in connection with World Oceans Day here on Thursday.
Inaugurating the programme, organisation regional chairman Pattom Prasad said oceans were paying a heavy price for man’s advancements.
All kinds of waste, be it that from drains, septic tanks, farms, motor vehicles, or industrials units, was finding its way into the sea, he said.
Nuclear waste
Even nuclear waste was being dumped into the sea, Parishad district committee member V.K. Nandanan said. Its regional secretary P. Pradeep administered the Ocean Day pledge.
The Parishad called for a people’s collective to take up activities to protect the sea just as land and forests were being protected. Its regional president T.P. Sudhakaran presided.
Beach cleaning
A mass beach cleaning campaign involving hotels, resorts, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, travel and tourism associations, and social clubs from Kanyakumari to Kasaragod was held in their respective areas under the aegis of the Uday Samudra group in connection with the day.
The Ocean Love ‘Beach and Marine Environment Protection Council’ was launched on the occasion with the aim of protecting oceans and creating awareness in society regarding marine pollution.
The council will educate the public and staff members of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other establishments located on the beach to initiate proper waste disposal so that it does not end up harming oceans, rivers, and lakes.
Strategies
It will also develop strategies to implement solutions to problems caused by plastic, raw sewage and so on, and keep beaches clean through a continuous process.
