Compensation for student injured in class

July 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:15 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed that compensation be given to a child who sustained injuries when she was in class.

The commission directed the Local Self-government Secretary to pay Rs.30,000 as solatium to Sandra Rajan of St. John’s Higher Secondary School, Mattam, Mavelikara, Alappuzha, who was hit on the head by a piece of a roof tile that broke when a coconut from a tree fell on it. The tree stood on the premises of a house near the school.

The commission said that government could recover the money as per a court verdict from the owner of the tree. The school had asked the Mavelikara municipality and the Revenue Department to cut down the precarious tree but to no avail. It was only after the accident that the municipality cut the tree with the help of the police.

It also sought that it be informed of the steps taken in this regard by August 9.
