Garbage being shifted to a TRIDA plot at Attakulangara

Earthmovers and tippers swung into action from Saturday morning at the Attakulangara bypass at Chala, chipping away at the garbage mounds that had formed there following the closure of the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant.

The city Corporation has begun a cleaning drive in the 29 wards designated as Attukal Pongala festival area. The area near Chala has been accorded top priority.

Since there is no place to cart away the garbage to, the plan is to shift it from the roadside and bury it in a TRIDA-owned vacant plot behind. Part of the waste generated in the city on the Pongala day, February 26, too will be taken to this plot. The Corporation proposes to dump the remaining garbage at three other sites. The authorities are tight-lipped about these locations.

A meeting was held at the Corporation office involving Mayor K. Chandrika, some councillors, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) V.R. Vinod, and Deputy Commissioner of Police H. Manjunath. “All other facilities are more or less in place. Only the issue of waste management during the festival remains. We will have to work overtime to ensure that the city is cleaned up ahead of the festival,” said the Mayor.

The ADM told The Hindu that a final decision was yet to be taken on the shifting of soil to bury the waste at Chala. “I received the application from the Corporation only in the afternoon and then directed the village officers at Tiruvallam, from where the soil would be dug up, to submit a report. Once that is submitted, the Revenue Department will be alerted,” said Mr. Vinod. By Monday, the garbage will be buried, according to works standing committee chairperson V.S. Padmakumar.

The installation of LED streetlights and other electrical maintenance work was being completed, said Mr. Padmakumar. Sixty water tanker lorries would be deployed and 1,000 additional water taps would be installed.

The DCP promised to strengthen police patrolling.
