A five-day sanitation programme at prominent tourist spots in all 14 districts of the State, to be carried out under the aegis of Kerala Tourism, will be launched by Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar in the presence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at 9 a.m. at Kovalam in Thiruvanthapuram on Tuesday.
The sanitation programme to coincide with the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations of the department will see the participation of public representatives, local self-governing bodies, members of the tourism industry, voluntary organisations, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme volunteers and Student Tourism Club members apart from environmental activists.
The programme will be held at Kovalam, Veli and Sangumugham in the State capital, while in Kollam district, the Kollam Beach and the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake will receive the much-needed clean-up. The rest of the spots are Konni and Aranmula (Pathanamthitta district); Kottayam, Kumarakom and Vaikom (Kottayam district); Alappuzha Beach, Vijaya Park and Punnamada (Alappuzha district); Wagamon and Parunthumpara (Idukki); Cherai, Fort Kochi and Kumbalanghi (Ernakulam); Peechi and Vazhani (Thrissur); Malampuzha, Kanjirapuzha, Palakkad Fort and Mangalam Dam (Palakkad); Nila Park, Kuttipuram, Padinjarekara Beach and Kottakkunnu (Malappuram); Thusharagiri, Kappad, Kozhikode Beach and Sarovaram (Kozhikode); Edakkal Caves, Pookode Lake, Kalpetta Town and Kuruva Islands (Wayanad); Payyambalam, Muzhuppilangadu and Chal Beach (Kannur); and Bakel Fort and Kasaragod Beach (Kasaragod).
Jameela Prakasham, MLA, will preside over the State-level launch of the programme at Kovalam, while Mayor K. Chandrika, Tourism Secretary Suman Billa and Tourism Director Rani George will be present.
