Civic body drive to rid city of plastic menace

23 plastic-free zones planned from July 1

May 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The city Corporation has decided to make 23 places in the city plastic-free zones from July 1 as part of its My City, Beautiful City campaign. The places are Vellayambalam, Vazhuthacaud, Jagathy, Poojappura, Karamana, Kaladi, Attukal, Konchiravila, Ambalathara, Muttathara, Bypass, Eenchakkal, Chakka, Anayara, KIMS hospital area, Kumarapuram, Medical College, Chalakuzhy, LIC, Pattom, Marappalam, Kuravankonam, and Kowdiar.

The decision was announced by Corporation health standing committee chairperson S. Pushpalatha in the council on Thursday.

Traders in these places would need to switch to paper bags or plastic bags with thickness above 100 microns. The civic body would ensure that such packing materials were available in the market, she said.

Firms to be chosen

Ms. Pushpalatha announced the Corporation’s decision to invite expression of interest from firms to manage organic and inorganic waste generated in the city. After the closure of the Vilappilsala solid waste treatment plant, the civic body had been promoting decentralised garbage management through pipe and aerobic composts and biogas plants.

As per estimates, around 200 tonnes of garbage generated in the city was being processed though various decentralised forms. But a large amount of garbage was being dumped on the road. The firms selected would be entrusted with the task of collecting and disposing of the waste, she said.

Welfare standing committee chairman Palayam Rajan said ‘Jyothi Manniram,’ a short-stay home for women at Sreekanteswaram, would be inaugurated next month. The council witnessed arguments between United Democratic Front (UDF) and Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors over the delimitation exercise. The UDF councillors accused the ruling LDF of carrying out the exercise in an ‘unscientific manner’ to make political gains. Works standing committee chairman V.S. Padmakumar said the civic body had no role in it. It was the Election Commission which carried out the delimitation exercise, he said.
