A pair of hyenas have reached the city zoo from the Kanpur.

The hyenas have been brought in exchange for four pairs of rheas.

The adult hyenas named Bijily, aged 3, and Romy, aged three years and four months, have been housed in cages in the animal enclosure at the zoo. They were likely to be released for public display only after a few days, Zoo Director K. Gangadharan said.

Doing fine

The animals were doing fine, though their appetite was yet to pick up, zoo veterinarian Jacob Alexander said. During the train journey from Kanpur, the animals were fed chicken, but in the zoo, they would be given beef and bones daily, he said. The animals, which were living in semi-wild conditions in the Kanpur zoo, had some minor abrasions sustained during their capture and transfer, he said. They would be given necessary vaccinations.
