Who would have thought that on a day when most hotels and eateries remained closed, a lucky few could treat themselves to a sumptuous meal of chapatti and piping hot chicken curry at just Rs.25?
The chapattis and chicken curry, celebrity products of the Central Prison at Poojapura, made a grant entry at select places in the city with the launch of a mobile sale unit in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.
The mobile sale unit, flagged off by prison inmates Karupuswamy and G. Varghese, covered areas near the city’s Medical College Hospital and General Hospital. “Within six hours of rolling out the unit, approximately 25,000 chapattis were sold out. The demand was huge as a lot of them had no options to dine on Saturday, with most of the hotels remaining closed,” said B. Pradeep, jail superintendent.
The chapatti, five in a packet, is available with a choice of vegetable and chicken curry. The price for chapatti with vegetable curry was Rs.20.
Affordable
“The main reason we started this venture was to provide quality food to people at affordable price. We have received a good profit. With the increasing demand, we may have to launch additional mobile units,” added the jail superintendent.
Mr. Pradeep also said special care had been taken to maintain hygiene and provide quality food to the public. The production was being carried out in the most hygienic manner, he said.
While chicken was brought from the Kerala State Poultry Development Corporation, vegetables were supplied by the Horticulture Mission.
