Childline officials on Friday rescued a 16-year-old Assamese girl, who had allegedly been subjected to child labour for the past three years.
The minorwas allegedly abandoned by her employer, an engineer from Assam, and his wife, both of whom resided in Eenchakkal. She was rescued by a team led by Childline Thiruvananthapuram coordinator Mereena Emmanuel and rescue officer S.K. Ratheesh.
Mr. Ratheesh said the girl had been employed by the Assamese family as a maid three years ago. She used to accompany them to places where the engineer worked. They had stayed in New Delhi prior to their relocation to Thiruvananthapuram.
“Though she had been assured a monthly wage of ₹1,000, the girl had not received any remuneration for three years. She said her employer’s wife had tortured her physically and and mentally. On Friday, she was asked to leave the house without notice and was given ₹3,500, which the family claimed was her salary dues,” Mr. Ratheesh said. The girl was assisted by office-bearers of the Akshara Veedhi Residents’ Association, who contacted the Childline.
Report sent to police
She was produced before the Child Welfare Committee, following which a report was sent to the Poojappura police. She was rehabilitated at the Snehitha shelter home at Peroorkada.
