Chennithala to be UDF chairman

June 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:17 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala will also be the chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the light of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s refusal to take up any assignment.

The UDF chairman’s slot had been left vacant in order to accommodate Mr. Chandy, who had taken a firm stand right from the beginning.

Call to Chandy

A UDF leadership meeting and the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) executive committee meeting held a couple of weeks ago had urged Mr. Chandy to take up the assignment.

The party leaders also hoped to get the high command to pressurise Mr. Chandy to take up the assignment.

Mr. Chennithala, who was in Delhi, held discussions with the party high command, prior to making a formal announcement that he would take over the UDF chairman’s post.
