Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the distribution of drinking water from an exclusive water treatment plant built as part of the proposed Vizhinjam International sea port.

The inauguration will be held near the water treatment plant, adjacent to the Vizhinjam Fire Force station near here on April 25.

The water supply project, which includes a water treatment plant of capacity 3.3 Million Litres Per Day (MLD), is being implemented by the Kerala Water Authority. Three MLD of water, sourced from the Vellayani lake, is expected to be purified using this plant. While 1.5 MLD will be used for the project, 1.5 MLD will be distributed to the nearby areas, which has been facing acute shortage of drinking water.

The function, to be presided over by Minister for Water Resources K.C. Joseph, will be also attended by Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor and Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar.
