Central help sought for State’s helmet drive

August 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:34 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Transport Commissioner has moved the government for a directive of the Petroleum Ministry to retail outlets to dispense fuel only to helmet-wearing two-wheeler riders.

Transport Commissioner Tomin J. Thachankary’s letter to the Secretary, Transport, is against the backdrop of the campaign ‘Wear helmet, get petrol’ launched by the Motor Vehicles Department in three cities in the State. The Commissioner pointed out that Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odissa have approached the Union Ministry for such a directive.

The enforcement drives of the MVD alone will not help in reducing road accidents, Mr. Thachankary said, adding that a legal backing was necessary to make the life-saving movement a success. — Special Correspondent
