Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has cautioned against retrograde forces trying to douse the light of renaissance spread by Sree Narayana Guru and propagating evil customs practised in the State a century ago.

Inaugurating a function organised by the NGO Union here on Tuesday to mark the culmination of the centenary celebrations of the proclamation made by the Guru for a casteless society, Mr.Vijayan said the Guru was not one who meditated and pursued spirituality in isolation. He made effective social interventions that heralded remarkable social changes.

The proclamation for a casteless society was made from the Adwaita Ashram at Aluva in 1916. Now, there were attempts to confine the ideals of the Guru in a narrow framework and use them for political gains. There were moves to upset the gains of the social movement pioneered by the Guru, mislead society and revive a social order that was in force a century ago, he said. Mr. Vijayan said that the all-religion meet held at the behest of the Guru accented on bringing together all religions and propagated against religious conflicts.
