Pinarayi Vijayan, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said here on Monday that caste and religious outfits were trying to serve their selfish interests by dictating terms to political parties, but the communist parties would scuttle their plan.
Inaugurating a public meeting to mark the culmination of the 32-day march organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India to defend secularism and social harmony in the State, he said these organisations were moving away from the path set for them by their founders, and its leaders were now only interested in making money.
Recalling the social reform movements, particularly the one led by Sree Narayana Guru and the struggles by the trade union movements to remove societal ills and to protect the rights of various classes, he said the fruits of these social movements and struggles had put Kerala ahead of other States on the social front. But the recent trends would only pull the State backwards to the pre-reform era, he said urging the youth to thwart such attempts as giving space to these organisations would make the prospects of the future generation bleak. He said the CPI(M) would not associate with any caste or religious organisations. It was a pity that a national party such as the Congress succumbed to pressure from the Nair Service Society. There was nothing wrong in caste organisations placing their demands before political parties but they should confine their role to the intended purpose of serving society.
