Spiritual conclave to mark 91st birth anniversary of Santhigiri founder Karunakara Guru

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The five-day Global Spiritual Conclave, being organised by the Santhigiri Research Foundation, to mark the 91st birth anniversary of its founder Karunakara Guru, has called for a spiritual reawakening to provide a healing touch.

Inaugurating the conclave here on Saturday, Prof. Mark Juergensmeyer of the Department of Global Studies and Sociology at the University of California said the evolution in connectivity, technology and wisdom should go hand in hand. The spiritual era should be transformed into a spiritual era, he added.

Chairing the session, S.R. Bhatt, chairman, Indian Council of Philosophical Research, said the universal principles of peaceful co-existence, cooperation, mutual caring and sharing, non-violence, compassion, peace, truth, honesty and selflessness needed strong reiteration in the contemporary world.

Academics and spiritual leaders from various countries, including S.S. Rama Rao Pappu, Miami University (Ohio), USA, Prof. David Peter Lawrence, Department of Philosophy and Religion, University of Chicago, Professor Geo Lyong Lee, SUN Moon University, Korea, Prof. Sergey Pakhomov, Department of Indian Culture, St. Petersburg University, St. Petersburg, Russia, Prof. Haiyan Shen, Dept. of Philosophy, Shanghai University, Shanghai, China, and Dr. Moragollagama Uparathana, head, Department of Pali, Buddhist and Pali University, Sri Lanka, are participating in the cultural conclave.

Sri Lankan deputy foreign minister Wasantha Senanayake will open a conference being organised on Sunday at the Santhigiri Ashram to mark the year-long Karunakara Guru’s 91st birth anniversary celebrations.
