July 23, 2017 08:55 pm | Updated 08:55 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram

The differently abled should not be denied admission to undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional courses and rules regarding this should be strictly adhered to, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities G. Harikumar has said.

As per Section 39 of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights, and Full Participation) Act, 1995, at least 3% of seats in government and other educational institutions should be kept aside for children with special needs.

And as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016, which was passed by the Parliament in winter session last year, five per cent of seats in higher education should be so set aside.

The rule is applicable to government, aided, government-regulated private colleges, universities, other educational institutions, and academies.

All university and college authorities and parent-teacher associations should pay special attention to this, he says.

The differently abled should be given grace marks they are entitled to in university examinations.
