Call to discourage rote learning

A.P.M. Mohammad Hanish, General Education Secretary, has stressed the need to discourage rote learning and for three-way communication among students, parents, and teachers to ensure effective education.

He was delivering the inaugural address at a three-day principals’ conference of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Ernakulam Region, held in the city.

A musical concert by students of KV Pattom shift-I and a dance performance by students of KV Pallipuram kicked off the programme.

Awards

Prizes were presented to students for scoring 100 per cent in various subjects in Classes 10 and 12 CBSE exams, teachers of various subjects for achieving the highest performance index in the region, and principals of four KVs in the region for consecutively producing 100 per cent results for the past few years.

Various topics were taken up for discussion in sessions that followed. In one such session, Director of Public Instruction K.V. Mohan Kumar spoke of the need to foster creativity among students. S.M. Saleem, Deputy Commissioner, KVS, Chennai Region who was the chief guest at the function, highlighted the use of information and communication technology in education.
