Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has called for more responsible use of electricity to address the steadily worsening situation of electricity consumption.
He was speaking at the inaugural of the construction of a Green Building Complex accommodating the Energy Management Centre, Energy Management Institute and the UNIDO Regional Centre at Sreeekaryam here on Monday.
Mr. Chandy said electricity had become a commodity that was not only growing more expensive, but was available in scarcer amounts. He called for schemes to address problems related to electricity supply and consumption. With environmental issues assuming primacy, forestry- and water resources-related programmes had taken a back seat in formulation, he said. Alternative sources such as solar, wind power and water resources need to be tapped to devise a solution to electricity-related problems, the Chief Minister said.
Minister for Electricity Aryadan Mohammed, who presided over the function, said a scheme would be introduced soon pertaining to setting up LED lamps in official government establishments, including the Corporation office. In addition, the Union government had granted consent for a programme that envisaged rooftop solar panels in 10,000 houses. This is being implemented after receiving a subsidy of Rs. 1, 20,000, he said.
