Burglars have stolen parts of trophies and damaged several of such memorabilia at the home of cricketer Sanju V. Samson near Vizhinjam here.
The Vizhinjam police said thieves carved out the copper portion from several trophies, leaving behind the base, apart from damaging a few, that were kept in the main hall of the house. These included some won by his elder brother Saly Samson, also a cricketer who has donned State colours. The family had left the house locked since they stayed more at a rented house, near Muttathara, closer to the city. The police suspected the incident to have occurred between Sunday and Thursday.
Sanju’s parents, Samson Viswanadh and Ligy, had seen the window grills tampered when they reached the home on Sunday, but did not report the incident to the police since nothing was lost. They left for Muttathara again and returned on Thursday to cast their votes, when they found that the house was broken into again with the trophies stolen and damaged. Several costly cricket bats and other gear that were in another room of the house, and other valuables, were left untouched. The thieves could have gained entry through a single room on the terrace, the police said. Mr. Viswanadh, after reporting the incident to the police, left for Mumbai on Thursday where Sanju is participating in an Indian Premier League (IPL) training camp. V.J. Jophy, Circle Inspector, Vizhinjam, and forensic experts were at the site.
