The BJP said it will observe a hartal on Wednesday, if PDP leader Abdul Nasir Maudany is not arrested, BJP State president V. Muraleedharan announced here on Tuesday.

The State president told a hurriedly convened press conference that the failure of the police to arrest Mr. Maudany so far was a challenge to rule of law. The Home Minister’s stand on the issue and the silence of the United Democratic Front were equally objectionable, he added.

The party subsequently withdrew the call for hartal, in view of the arrest of Mr. Maudany later in the day.
