Protesting against injustice in society is very good, but true changes in society would come about only when the attitude of the people towards issues changes.

Campuses should be places where boys and girls receive real education and not just places which enable them to get fancy degrees, social activist Sunitha Krishnan said here on Monday.

She was speaking at a programme organised by the Kerala University Union to felicitate students who received ranks in various degree examinations of the university.

One often wonders what the meaning of ‘true education’ is. If the campuses here offer true education to students, why are girls insecure in society? Why is their ragging? Why are women being killed in the name of dowry? All these heinous acts are being committed by highly ‘educated’ people. In fact, the more a person is educated, the more he or she seems to exploit others, she pointed out.

Protesting against injustice in society is very good, but true changes in society would come about only when the attitude of the people towards issues changes. If students are truly educated, then a boy would respect a girl and a girl would respect herself. Education is that which is able to bring about this change in attitude, Ms. Krishnan said. She added that she wished students would become the ‘change agents of today.’Pro-vice chancellor J. Prabhash was present on the occasion.
