After a hiatus of three years that witnessed allegations and counter allegations of corruption and debates over the pros and cons of prohibition, liquor bars in the State formally opened their doors for business on Sunday.

The new liquor policy came into effect on Saturday, but it was only on Sunday that the bars started humming because the first day of every month is a dry day. Of the closed ones, only 77 bars, in the three and four star categories, that had applied for permits started functioning on Sunday.

Currently, there are 23 bars in the five-star category in the State.

Under the new norm, bars will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
