People’s representatives who took part in a meeting of the district consultative committee for banking development here on Saturday urged banks to be more liberal in granting education loans.
In his inaugural address A. Sampath, MP, urged bankers to be socially committed and also expressed concern over the reducing credit-deposit ratio of the district.
A press note said he asked to create awareness and clarity regarding the norms relating to granting such loans. As part of their social commitment, bankers should sponsor infrastructure facilities in government schools.
Palode Ravi, MLA said bankers should grant more educational loans to students from poor families who get admission under management quota to local colleges. In the agricultural sector, banks in the district disbursed Rs.3,550 crore against a target of Rs. 2,176 crore. In the services sector, banks disbursed Rs.3,099 crore against a target of Rs.2,862 crore. In the non-farm sector, the disbursement was Rs. 260 crore. In the year 2011-12, financial institutions in the district disbursed Rs.6,910 crore in the priority sector against a target of Rs. 5,394 crore.
