Ayyankali Trophy boat race on September 17

The annual boat race for the Ayyankali Trophy will be held on the Vellayani Lake here on September 17, District Collector K.N Sathish has said.

At a press conference here on Monday, he said the boat race would be held from around 2 p.m. on September 17 from a point near the Thrikulangara temple. Health Minister V.S Sivakumar will inaugurate the event, he said.

From this year, big rowing boats from Alappuzha will participate in the regatta, he said. A competition in kayaking will be held.

Several associated events have been planned. Union Minister of State for Human Resource Shashi Tharoor will inaugurate the campaign of the race near the Vellayani Devi temple on September 14. The next day, Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan and Tourism Minister A. P Anil Kumar will participate in a seminar on environment to be held at Kakkamoola.

Sugathakumari, poet, and district panchayat vice-president Rufus Daniel will participate in a cultural meeting on September 15, Mr. Sathish said.
