Sixteen specially designed autorickshaws with insulated boxes will bring fresh fish to customers’ doorstep. The facility was launched by Minister for Fisheries K. Babu on Wednesday.

The autorickshaws, at Rs.1.98 lakh each, were designed by Kerala Automobiles Ltd. for the Kerala Coastal Area Development Corporation which is spearheading the “Fresh fish to all” project under the Union Agriculture Ministry. A team of five fish workers were given a three-wheeler. The beneficiaries pooled 25 per cent of the cost and the rest was provided as grant by the Centre and the State.

Launching the autorickshaws, Mr. Babu said the Centre had agreed to provide another 1,000 motorcycles, 200 autorickshaws, and 50 trucks to the State under the project.

Managing Director of the Corporation K. Ambady said already nine trucks and 135 two-wheelers had been given. Of the Rs.3.9 crore, the Centre had provided Rs.2.70 crore.
