The Rural Police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man on the charge of attempting to murder a neighbourhood woman betrothed to another person for marriage later this month.

Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Gopakumar identified the accused as Jaleel, a resident of Balaramapuram. He said Jaleel had struck up a friendship with the 20-year-old woman when she worked as a sales girl for a brief period at a neighbourhood mobile phone shop.

The woman's parents engaged her to another person and her marriage was scheduled for April 5. According to the police, Jaleel went to her house on Monday and stabbed her two times. The woman was in a serious condition in a multi-speciality hospital in the district.
