A two-day State-level camp and trials for GAIL-Indian Speedstar will commence at the G.V. Raja Stadium here on Saturday. GAIL-Indian Speedstar is a CSR initiative by GAIL (India) Limited, aimed at identifying, screening and grooming young Indian athletes in the 11-17 age group in track events.
On Saturday, trials will be held for those who cannot compete in the district level.
The shortlisted athletes can participate in the national camp and selection process to be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, next month.
Special training
The top nine athletes who meet the benchmark set by the national selection committee headed by P.T. Usha will be provided special training to prepare for the 2020/2024 Olympics.
“Through this initiative, we aim at identifying hidden talents across the country who can be groomed to win medals for the country in the international arena,” Sindhu P. Kavinamannil, State representative, GAIL, told a press conference in the city on Friday.
