Passing by the Vazhuthacaud-Cotton Hill stretch, one is unlikely to miss the nearly 2-m tall Ashoka trees standing on the median. The 12 trees on the stretch celebrated their fifth birthday on Sunday under the aegis of the Friends of Trees, a city-based non-governmental organisation.
The celebrations, attended by Friends of Trees members, well-wishers, and students, were inaugurated by P.N. Surendran, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
Jishnu and Syedali, two students who helped with the planting and watering of the trees, were honoured.
The trees were planted on October 15, 2012. Today, they are 2-m tall.
The NGO says Ashoka is an indigenous evergreen tree that requires no maintenance. It is ideal for planting on road dividers in contrast to many other species that dot dividers at present.
