The revenue district school social science fair and IT Mela organised by the Department of General Education began at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School here on Monday.

The three-day programme will include Science, Mathematics, Social Science and Work Experience fairs and IT Mela for lower primary, upper primary, high school and higher secondary school students of the district.

Around 8,500 students from schools in 12 educational sub-districts were participating in the programme which was inaugurated by Mayor K. Chandrika here on Monday.

One the first day of the event Social Science and Mathematics fairs, digital painting, IT quiz and Malayalam typing competitions under IT Mela and elocution competition were held. Over 2,800 students participated in the competitions.

Working and static models on the effects of global warming, the Cuban missile crisis, LED-powered models on the flow of oceanic currents and models of artefacts and historic monuments from across the world were among the exhibits in the Social Science section.

Models of different types of bridges, geometric figures and patterns like Archimedean solids and geometric representation of everyday articles were among the competing models in the Mathematics Fair.

On Tuesday, Mathematics quiz, Work Experience Fair, Science Fair as well as IT project, multimedia presentation and web designing competitions under IT Mela will be held.

The valedictory function will be held on November 24. Exhibition of competing models will also be held on the final day.

Winners at the revenue district fair will compete at the State-level social science fair.

The dates and venue of the State-level fair were yet to be finalised, said St. Mary's HSS Principal Fr. Mathew Karoor.
