O. Rajagopal, former Union Minister of State and BJP candidate in the by-election from Neyyattinkara, along with his supporters offered a day-long fast at Neyyattinkara on Friday in protest against the “government allowing a free reign of extremist forces in the State.”

The fast, staged to coincide with the first anniversary of the UDF government, was also against the UDF using the murder of Revolutionary Marxist party leader T. P. Chandrasekharan for electoral gains.

Former State president of the party C. K. Padmanabhan inaugurated the fast in the morning. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Padmanabhan said that the Congress had surrendered to the Muslim League. The fifth ministership for the party was the result of that.

He said that the ruling and Opposition fronts were trying to hide the real issues from the voters. It would be possible for the voters to bring about a change by electing Mr. Rajagopal to the Assembly and rejecting turncoats.

BJP State president V. Muraleedharan, State general secretary K. P. Sreesan and other leaders spoke. Mr. Rajagopal ended his fast at 5 pm, receiving lime juice from Mr. Muraleedharan.
